Rufftone (born Roy Smith Mwatia) is a foundational figure in Kenyan gospel music who helped elevate the genre to mainstream dominance in the early 2000s. Raised in a musical family alongside his brother Daddy Owen, the Kakamega High School and Buruburu Institute of Fine Arts alumnus initially started in secular music before dedicating his career to gospel. He became widely celebrated across East Africa for blending traditional instrumentation with contemporary urban sounds, delivering massive hits in his native Luhya language like "Mwikulu" and "Tsinyanga Tsiwere," as well as the patriotic anthem "Mungu Baba" alongside the GSU choir. Beyond performing, he established Lampstand Records to mentor emerging artists, launched his own clothing line, served as a Goodwill Ambassador for South Korea, and is married to fellow gospel musician Krystal.
