Mercy Myra Grundberg is a Kenyan R&B and Afro-fusion singer-songwriter who helped shape East Africa's contemporary music scene. She began her career in the mid-1990s performing with local groups like the Calabash Band, Destinee, and Black Ice, before launching a successful solo career in 1998 with her breakout hit "Sitaki." Throughout the early 2000s, she topped East African music charts with her studio albums Tabasamu (2001) and Nyisri Malong'o (2003), writing lyrics in Swahili, English, and Luo over jazz, soul, and hip-hop rhythms. Her work earned her multiple Kisima Music Awards and an international audience, leading to performances at major European festivals and a spot in the all-female supergroup Divas of the Nile. After moving to the United States in 2005, she won the 2009 Msanii Award for Best Female Artist and later returned to the studio in 2016 through a deal with an Atlanta-based label.
