Bella Bellow

Bella Bellow (1945–1973) was an iconic Togolese singer-songwriter celebrated as one of the most powerful and influential African vocalists of the late 1960s and early 1970s. Dubbed the "blues woman of Africa," she built a glittering international career by beautifully blending traditional Togolese folklore and Ewe rhythms with contemporary blues, jazz, and soul arrangements. After a breakthrough performance at the 1966 World Festival of Negro Arts in Dakar, she went on to collaborate with legendary musicians like Manu Dibango, release her signature hit "Rockia," and grace world-renowned stages from the Olympia in Paris to Rio de Janeiro's Maracanã Stadium. Tragically, her meteoric rise was cut short when she died in a car crash at just 28 years old, but her rich artistic blueprint continues to inspire generations of African icons, most notably global superstar Angélique Kidjo.
